The Darkside Detective

The Darkside Detective is an episode-based point and click adventure game, where you play short episodes, each focused on a single supernatural case. This makes it easy to play in small bursts, and is structured so that the first 6 cases are all related to each other (and the game ends in Episiode 6), and there are 3 bonus cases to play too. I played it on the Steam Deck, which worked perfectly well, although it is cursor based so probably works better with a mouse. The writing was genuinely enjoyable, and felt like just a really well made self contained game. I'd recommend anyone who enjoys short story games to check it out. Humour is always subjective, but I enjoyed it.

Pros

  • Excellent writing
  • Nice short episodes
  • In my head, the two main characters were Simmons from Person of Interest, and David Tennant’s Doctor Who
  • Not too difficult. Point and click games have a nasty tendency to have solutions to puzzles that you'd only know if you were the developer. I didn't have any trouble with the game but really enjoyed just moving from one piece to the next
  • Pretty funny in some places
