Tactical Breach Wizards

Easily the most enjoyable and memorable game I've played in the last year. Tactical Breach Wizards is a turn based tactical combat game which takes place in relatively small rooms. Each room comes with a series of objectives (usually "knock out all the hostiles") over the course of a 20-30 hour campaign. Your team starts small and eventually consists of 5 witches and wizards with completely unique skills, and you need to work out how to use them together. Each mission also includes dialogue before breaching, and the story ties up each character arc during the credits. The writing is clever and witty, the UI is clear, and everything about it just feels really good to play.

Pros

  • I cannot express how excellent and funny the writing is. No other game has made me laugh so consistently
  • About 30 hours of fantastic room-based combat puzzles
  • A core game mechanic is pushing enemies out of windows
  • The gameplay is really refined. No bugs, clear UI, good feedback on what's going to happen
  • Unlike Into The Breach where you have to plan everything out in your head, this lets you do each move sequentially and rewind to the beginning of the turn any time you like
  • Each team member levels up. When they do, you can put points into their abilities to give them additional effects
  • Works better on PC, but is totally functional on the Steam Deck too
  • Abilities are introduced at a good pace, and with good reason. It particularly made me laugh where one of the characters said "I totally forgot that I brough my broom! That's going to make things a lot easier". Not finding a new item or learning something, just pure forgetting she already had something.
  • There are optional challenges in each level if you want to get more out of it
  • You can replay each level with new characters you've unlocked
  • Unique skills that you unlock by completing a special set of side missions for each character
  • A whole set of challenge missions
