Nice Day for Fishing

This is a fishing game set in the world of the Viva La Dirt League's "Epic NPC Man". If you've been watching that series (and you absolutely should) then you should probably love this. It's actually longer than I thought it would be, and they've managed to do a great job with the dialogue and keeping it engaging throughout. The gameplay loop pretty much revolves around fetch quests like SkyCraft, and somehow they've managed to make fishing work as a viable main mechanic for an unlikely hero saving the world.

Pros

  • It fits the lore, story and humour of the YouTube series perfectly. It feels just like you’d expect to be playing in the world of Epic NPC Man
  • I love that when the woodcutter moves into town with his wife and child, they aren’t there (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQ65MK5ZnHQ)
  • They do an amazing job of making the gameplay all doable by a fisherman.
  • I love that throughout the entire game, your three voice lines are “Mornin’”, “Nice day for fishing ain’t it” and “Hua ha”. And all the NPCs act like you’ve said something intelligible
  • You start out as just a basic fisherman, but over time you get upgrades which increase the reel length, let you move the bob left to right underwater, attract fish etc. Eventually the game turns into more of an underwater maze as you work out how to get the bobber to the fish you're looking for
  • The game is entirely carried by it's writing (mechanically it's pretty repetitive)

Cons

  • You can’t pause while fishing (or during boss fights)
  • Gameplay gets repetitive
  • Absolutely murders the Steam Deck battery for some reason
  • You can't view the "fish encyclopaedia" without walking all the way to the Thidon NPC. YOu also can't look at it at all while you're on a quest for that NPC
