I Am Future

I Am Future is an upbeat mix of survival, exploration and deconstruction. You awake on a rooftop of a skyscraper in a ruined world and slowly uncover who you were, what happened, and why you survived. The gameplay loop revolves around deconstructing the environment, crafting tool upgrades, crafting stations, and robot helpers. It's way longer than I thought it would be and generally well polished and relaxing.

Pros

  • Beautiful simplistic graphics
  • All resources are renewable
  • Interesting setting
  • Objects are deconstructed in different ways rather than just clicking on them, which makes it more engaging (sawing, hammering, drilling etc)
  • You can pin recipes to remember what you're doing
  • Interesting crafting recipes
  • You fix up a drone which can go out exploring for you, and discover locations with renewable loot and story locations
  • There are NPCs you can bring back to base
  • Minion bots to carry stuff around
  • Has a "coziness slider" to allow you to customise the gameplay. Like by default, leeches attack your crops and you need to build defenses. You can turn that off if you want.
  • The map you uncover is huge, with interesting set pieces to discover
  • So many tool upgrades
  • You can fix the holes in the floor!
  • Has an electrical grid with various kinds of poles, generators and lots of machines that use it

Cons

  • I'm not a fan of the camera controls
  • Music is repetitive
  • The friendship level thing with the NPC machines isn't very engaging and felt unnecessary
  • Moving objects around is kinda clunky - you have to be near them, and you can only move one thing at a time
  • There are a few oddities like misspelt item and NPC names
  • The conversations and story at the very end of the game feel a bit rushed and don't make a lot of sense
