Green Hell

Played for 2 hours and have exactly zero progress. Thanks to the save system, I played for a whole day, started building a base, couldn't find the materials I needed, then died to an infection. Restart. This time I found the camp site you were apparently supposed to find the first time and started building a shelter. Saved the game. Got attacked and killed by a Jaguar. No defense, died, save game is gone. Not exactly my idea of fun. I guess the idea is that it goes back to basic survival mechanics rather than the progression system of base building that most modern ones have, but constantly bandaging and eating plants to combat nasic negative effects is a chore.

Pros

  • If you like absolute basics, this is really focused on basic survival
  • Voice acted tutorial
  • You only discover recipes when it makes sense, like when you see one - or if you pick up a reagent. Immersive, but also makes it impossible to do something that you know should be possible, but you haven't found the right item yet
  • The developers have continued to update the game long after release

Cons

  • The interface and the method for crafting things is really unintuitive
  • Building things requires A LOT of walking. You get one or two long sticks from a tree, and you need 8 for a basic building. You can carry two at a time.
  • Graphics aren't great, neither is the FPS
  • Save system that means you lose a lot of progress if you die
  • Picking things up feels clunky. There's a delay, and your inventory is small.
