FOUNDRY (Demo)

I'm a sucker for any factory game. This one is published by Paradox, but made by a separate studio. It's a factory builder in a voxel world which has a huge amount of potential, but feels very early in development still. I'm excited to see where this one goes, because it's off to a great start.

Pros

  • New ore types, not just copper and iron
  • Voxel based, so you can create whatever landscape you like
  • Runs well
  • Voiced tutorial
  • Like Techtonica, power is connected by foundations rather than poles. This is interesting, although it makes building anything on multiple levels rather annoying because power only transfers if you build foundations in a vertical column, which is very fiddly
  • Mining is done by cute flying robots

Cons

  • The fact that everything has to be on foundations means that every time you want to build anything, you have to put foundations down first, which is kinda tedious
  • This is only the demo, so I imagine this will change a lot during development, but it didn't really seem to take any advantage of the voxel-based word. It procedurally generates a landscape, which is fine, but then there as nothing as you dug down. Hopefully, I'd expect to see in this game things like caves to explore, rare ore deposits further down, and some kind of natural hazards to navigate (no combat please).
  • Basically copies Factorio's method for science packs
  • I fell through the world (although I did then just spawn in the sky, so it wasn't game over)
