Bug Fables

I couldn't really get into Bug Fables. I appreciated the general mechanics and style of the game, but there were too many design decisions which I really disliked, ultimately stopping me from playing it. As far as I can tell, it's basically Paper Mario on PC - a class based RPG where you take a group of three characters through overworld locations, towns and dungeons, do fetch quests, and fight groups of enemies.

Pros

  • The dialogue was generally pretty interesting
  • I liked the main characters

Cons

  • Tiny inventory for carrying healing items
  • I don’t like the button presses during combat. They're required to do more damage or block attacks
  • The window for pressing a button to block is very unclear
  • The three main characters pretty much have one attack each that you just use over and over again
  • If you die, you lose everything since the previous save, which is a huge waste of time
  • The only healing in the game (apart from the first few save points) is through items. You don’t get health back at save points. Combined with losing all progress since the last save point if you die, this generally makes the game a waste of time.
  • Walking through the cartoon featureless landscapes is boring, and there's an amount of backtracking
  • Moving around the world is slow
  • You never get stronger, but enemies continue to gain hp, which makes the already annoying combat even more grindy
