Bore Blasters

Bore Blasters is a 2D roguelike mining game. It's not described as a roguelike, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it, but each level is effectively the same, with temporary upgrades, and a permanent currency to make you progressively stronger over time. On each map there's a light quest like "Go here, kill this" or "Collect X of this" which was kind of interesting for a while, although they just stop about halfway through the levels with no resolution. The gameplay itself is great fun, if repetitive. You mine through thousands of bricks and fight off enemies, powers are varied and interesting, and it's well worth the cheap price of entry.

Pros

  • Addictive
  • Good range of powerups, although I always end up taking the same ones
  • Multiple biomes and level types which have different challenges and block types
  • If you get the right set of powerups, you can really tear holes in the map
  • Upgrades to things like fuel capacity, fire rate and damage
  • Solid, no bugs
  • 3 different characters to play as, each with their own special power

Cons

  • Very repetitive after the first 10 hours
  • Permanent upgrades are boring, just increases to numbers
  • About 50% of the way through the game, the quests just stop and it’s just the same mission over and over again
  • After you buy all the upgrades, there's nothing more to spend money on. I'd bought everything after about 10 hours, but there are 20 hours worth of maps
  • By the time you've bought all the upgrades, I was literally falling asleep in the repetitive maps after that, because you can mine blocks faster than you can fly - so you can just hold down for 5 minutes and win the map. Repeat for 10 hours.
